Convert betacode to koine Greek in realtime
To complement my post on displaying unicode on websites I thought that betacode deserved a mention…
I’ve only recently discovered the brilliant TypeGreek by Randy Hoyt. He’s produced a betacode converter for biblical / koine Greek that converts as you type. Have a go below:
As an example, try entering the following:
e)n a)rxh=| e)poi/hsen o( qeo\s to\n ou)rano\n kai\ th\n gh=n.
Alphabet Key
| a | b | g | d | e | z | h | q | i | k | l | m |
| α | β | γ | δ | ε | ζ | η | θ | ι | κ | λ | μ |
| n | c | o | p | r | s | t | u | f | x | y | w |
| ν | ξ | ο | π | ρ | σ | τ | υ | φ | χ | ψ | ω |
| a/ | a\ | a= | a) | a( | a| | i+ | ; |
| ά | ὰ | ᾶ | ἀ | ἁ | ᾳ | ϊ | · |
If you’re interested Randy’s mate, Phil Dow, has also created software called UniGreek that offers this functionality offline on your local computer instead of on the web.
Rico also offers a handy bulk conversion tool that handily converts betacode to unicode.

I too found your piece on Google as I was researching this subject. I appreciate the careful work you...

I haven’t had a chance to test this properly in many browsers yet so let me know if you encounter difficulties.

Sam. Just beginning to find my way around your excellent blog. Thanks for these useful resources on inputting/converting unicode text. From my point of view, for inputting, I recommend http://users.ox.ac.uk/~tayl0010/polytonic-greek-inputter.html because of the ‘clickable’ Greek Letters function.

Hey Pete, long time no see. Hope you’re doing well. Still at Nottingham?
Thanks for the link – you’re right, the ‘clickable’ option is awesome.

Sam,
Thanks for promoting my TypeGreek site. I’m glad you have found it useful! I saw your email about TypeGreek not working with Safari, and I did some digging. It turns out that TypeGreek will work with newer versions of Safari without any change. Thanks for the tip! I have modified my site to only show the Safari warning message if the visitor is using earlier than Safari 3.1.
Thanks again!
